In the book “Our America” there’s a constant reference to the differences between white kids, black kids, suburban kids and city kids. Every one of us is different, were from different communities, different areas, different cities and even different countries? How do you think we can all learn from each others differences to get through these past 4 weeks?
I think we can adapt from eachothers differences.Even though were different people from different places have similiarities to eachother. We can also omit any stereotypes we have from the we have learned prior to this experience. I enjoy everyones presence in the class. Does anyone feel uncomfortable still?
ReplyDeleteWe can learn what to say to people and how to act around them. Not trying to be phony or anything. But just to let them feel comfortable around you and the other people there with you. We can learn from them and they can learn from us. Learn what life is like outside the comforts of their home.
ReplyDeletewell i think that without realizing it, we all have already benefited from each others differences. idk about anybody else, but i feel comfortable enough now to at least hold a conversation with almost everybody in this class. the way we benefited from each other already is that we are all new college students and we have all become each others friend. college is scary for some people and making new friends is really hard. but i think that all of us have got off to a great start :) does anyone else feel the same or am i too optimistic? :P
ReplyDeleteEveryone that I have met so far at Bridge is very open to meeting people and is very friendly. I don't really think anyone has a problem with anyone elses differences. Sure there are a few people that weird me out but you learn to deal with other peoples differences. I think most people understand the whole college thing and know that they are going to meet people from all walks of life here. Especially because were in the city, where people come from all over to be here.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that we are all different makes the classroom better. If we were all the same people there would be nothing new to experience. Also I agree that through all the diversity any stereotype or thought that we might have previously thought can be changed and through the many differences in every person we can learn so much more. Everyone is genuine and friendly to one another.
ReplyDeletei dont feel uncomfortable! that is why i love columbia. everyone is DIFFERENT. We all might have alot in common on the inside and out and would be surprised to find out what those exaxt things are. I find myself befriending people that i usually wouldnt even start a conversation with. Basically thats what it comes down to. Does anyone feel that they have found friends that normally they would have never talked to pre-Columbia?
ReplyDeleteFirst we all need to understand eachothers backgrounds. We all come from different places and grew up in different neighborhoods. We weren't all raised on the same block, and we all do have our differences. Class discussions help students talk on same subjects and you get to know a person by hearing their point of view.
ReplyDeletePpl should be more optimistic, where I'm from there is still alot of racism and prejudice, it's just hidden and ppl try and deny it, I love to get to know ppl of other cultures and stuff because finding out new things is inspiring and helps us grow as ppl ya know?
ReplyDeleteI think that all of us came into this Bridge program ignorant to our classmates. Some of us judged based on the way others dressed and some on the way others talked. But as class went on we realized that different communities, different cities and different countries all can be similar. I have found out that some of my classmates like the same music or clothing line as I do. Also that a lot of my classmates are different from my normal range of friends but with the diversity I have learned new things I didn't know about different places. I found that if we just talk among each other we will be able to lend a hand to those in similar situations or just make a new friend who can still be there post college graduation. I happen to like all my classmates in different ways. Does anyone feel they have made a new friend so far?
ReplyDeletei've made so many friends at bridge and its only the third day! i hope that i will still be friends with alot although people do fall out.I think that people can be curious on learning more from someone they never encountered before. Has anyone met a friend that they would love to keep around during the fall semester at Columbia?
ReplyDeleteIf we knew each other backrounds, then we will get i understand and know each other more. If we knew each other backgrounds then we can become more like a family, then just friends. I think we should take one day during class to talk about or backroundes. Then we would get to know each other better. What do you think we should do to get to know each other better?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kurt! I didnt think college was going to be like this but i like love it! Everyone is so different and so unique and like interesting i want to be everyones bestfriend because everyone is so cool!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE HOW COLUMBIA IS NOT A TRADITIONAL COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. IS THERE ANYBODY WHOSE PARENTS WERE TRYING HARD TO GET THEM IN A TRADITIONAL UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE(HBCU)?
ReplyDeleteyea k.o my parents kept telling me to go to an hbcu or something and I kept fighting them about it so I ended up basically taking a yr off and messing up pretty bad so they eventually let me come here, but I understand that, we all just have to wrk harded because we're in the bridge program, but I think we all have potential to be successful
ReplyDeleteI agree with k.o. Columbia is in the city. We get an excperence know will ever get, becasue they are stuk at a camps. They can't go home or any where. You are stuck at that camps untill a holday. For the people at Columbia they can come and go when ever they want. Your in chicago. Theres so many things happening here. At a traditional school theres nothing happening there. Does any body else think of it like that?
ReplyDeletehaha..yesss!!! my mom did NOT want me coming to Columbia...she didnt want me coming to Chicago period! she told me she wants me to get a real education..something i can use if i dont make it to broadway. but i know that columbia is one of the best schools for me to chose for my major. and when i DO make it to broadway...cause i will... ;) i will owe it all to columbia
ReplyDeletewhat is hbcu?
ReplyDeleteKURT:HISTORICAL BLACK COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHA....oh...yeeeahahhhhh... hahaha.
ReplyDeleteKurt this is a vary good for you. It's good for anybody thats wants to get a good media or art major.
ReplyDeleteWe learn so much from each other by sharin our ideas and the way we look at things. People should be more sensitive in open their hearts and ears to people points of views. G golly if everyone did that the world be a better place, and it would be smiles up and down streetts. The sun would constantly shine and flowers would bloom in the concrete
ReplyDeleteLa coulton that was probably the sweetest and weirdest things i have ever heard. However on a different level that was very true.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes Columbia special and fun is that we are all different. Yet we all come here with one purpose, which is to achieve our goal and be successful. No matter our differences and backgrounds we come together. What makes you different and unique?
