Helping Hand - July 28

I watched Black in America 2, where Chris Rock’s wife took a group of New York youth to Africa. The kids came from bad neighborhoods with violence and some of them struggled within their homes, as far as having enough money for food, new clothes etc. But when they went to Africa they actually felt sorry for children there, whom didn’t have anything. After seeing the things these kids go without you start to think whether or not having the new Jordan’s or iPods is really a big deal. If you had the chance to go anywhere in the world to lend a helping hand, where would you go and why?

  1. I would go to some places in Italy. There's some parts that need help. They need help by building homes, get the right food and the right water to drink. The water over there is not good to drink. There's just some places that really need help with liveing. How would you help other people?

  2. I think I would try to help the people in Somalia because they have those pirates blocking ships bringing food, even though a lot of the pirates have good reason to block some of those ships.

  4. If I could go anywhere in the world to lend a helping hand, it would be somewhere in Africa where children are dying from starvation and disease. I chose Africa because that is one of the main countries that I know of that does not have enough help.

  5. I would probably go to Africa. I think some countries in Africa have it worse than anywhere else in the world. Sometimes when I see a video about Africa, I wish I had a bunch of money so I could go there and help those people. It drives me crazy to hear my friends or someone else say their life sucks, or they don't have a lot. Because just living in our country is better than living anywhere else.

Where would everyone else go and help people??

  6. I would go to Africa to help out the people that are starving without food, because when I see the pictures of skeleton looking children it makes me upset and has me thinking do we have it too good to be true?

  7. In my opinion I would probably visit Africa as well. It's something about the way I saw the children's reaction to the simple things in life and it made me want to give as well. Maybe even more than the simple things. I have a weakness for children not having a chance to be educated, hugged by a parent, enjoying a childhood or even smiling. I am probably the only one who tears up inside when I think of a six year old taking care of a four year old. I just want to see a little child smile at the first toy they can call their own or a pair of shoes that fit them and aren't worn out. To be able to feed a hungry family and give them that experience of being full enough to explode.

  8. If I could go anywhere in the world to help people I wouldn't want to go anywhere. I feel that there is so much work to be done in our own country. I feel that there are other countries that are in need of help but I really think that we should try to help out our own people, or do both at the same time.

  9. I would go to the Philapinnes because my parents are sponsors of a child. Her name is Denecca and they have been sponsoring her for about 7 yrs now. Basically since she was a baby, because she is only 9. Whenever we receive mail from her, we feel happy and sad at the same time. Happy, because we know that we are helping someone that needs help out of millions out there. Mad, because we can only do so muuch to help. It would take every single person in this world to help the needed. If all the people in this world were willing to help, what do you think they can do, and how?

  10. If I could go anywhere in the world, I would stay in America. Why would I go to a whole other country and try to lend a helping hand when hwe have people struggling here. I wold travel America trying to find people who have not been able to take care of themselves and maybe help them as best I can. That's majority of the reason why I am going to Columbia College. I want to become a big time music producer, and many other things. The money that I will get from this I will uses most of trying to help other people. Like I already have a plan when I finally get the money. I am goin to invest my first paycheck into some stocks insuring that I will have the money when I need it. I am going to invest in McDonalds frachize bringing in even more money, then I will start my own clothing line which hopefully bring in even more money. Does anyone also feel the same as me? Like they would rather help out our America first, and then help other counrties?

  11. Yea I kind of agree with Jen because our country is kind of screwed up itself and you can't help someone else if you cant help your self in terms of the government in America.

  12. if i wasn't able to go to Africa, which I'm most likely never going to do. I would want to stay here and help out America. No we may not be the worst country in the world and we don't need help right now. but the way out country is heading, were going to need help fast. We may not have areas like Somalia or Uganda, but we have areas like Detroit...http://www.juancole.com/graphics/Detroitghett2.jpg and Los Angeles...http://thebsreport.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/smog-infinite-wilderness_1.jpg. the picture of Detroit is of the poverty and the picture of L.A. is the smog that is ruining the atmosphere

  13. yeah, I agree with Jen and Jay, I feel the same way, we do have alot of wirk to be done with homeless and hungry in our own country, you see tons of homeless people on the streets here in Chicago

  14. I agree with Jay because I feel that America tends to find itself in countries that don't even want it there. It's not that I do not support us helping other countries I just feel like there are so many problems here we should solve them before going off and trying to help others. It may be a selfish way to look at it but I feel that America thinks more of the rest of the world then it's own people.

  15. If could anywhere in the world to lend a helping hand would be Africa, but I dont know what country though. It would be difficuilt to choose a country in Africa because there are a lot of needed to people everywhere. I know the place I do choose will be a well derserving place in need.

  16. I would love to go to Darfur to help out with the conflict going on over there. The war is being considered as a genocide and that alone should be enough information for anybody who wants to help. Does anybody know what exactly is going on in Darfur?

  17. no, but heard about it, hold on time to google it!

  18. Yeah, we have a lot of work that needs to be done in our own country. I agree with everyone who thinks that. We live in a land of opportunity, but the homeless aren't given an opportunity. I change my mind, I would rather fix problems in the U.S. than fix problems anywhere else.

  19. Hi all. I love that you are all interested in Africa since the last discussion. I would like to point out Africa is not like the United States: It isn't a country full of smaller states. Rather, it is a continent with many countries next to it. Try to imagine the United states surrounded by France, Germany, Japan, and Australia. That is just a glimpse at out diverse Africa is. Yes, many countries in Africa have problems, but many countries are also doing just fine living in an unindustrialized culture (that doesn't mean one is better than the other). Check this blog to get more information: http://sarahkgrant.blogspot.com/2008/10/two-myths-of-africa.html
Also, feel free to challenge my opinions. I may be your teacher, but I think this type of discussion should be interactive rather than one telling the other what to think.

  20. I would go to China. However agreeing with Jen our country kinds of sucks it self. On the otherhand a few years ago i visted China for 8 days. I was about 10 when i went and being that small you have the attention span of a squirrel and the maturity level of a pea. But being their i never want to go back i have never seen so many terrible things. I walked along the street their was loui vitton stores, they took us to the back with air condition leather couches and gave my parents champagne. Meanwhile a baby about 3 years old was holding a child about 18 months begging for money, another child with what looked like pollio was pushing a shoe box with his chin and dragging his legs behind him. I have been in the United States and i have been traveling out of the country and around the U.S since a little after a week after birth. I have never in seen anything as sad as that.

  21. I heard about Darfur and their genocide.I think it's two different kind of tribes or groups of people. One became like in power and started to kill off the other ones. I'm sure it's more to it but that's about what I can remember.

    ReplyDelete
  22. so I didnt do too much reading but, Wikipedia says its more of a genocide than a religous war, the government is trying to cover up alot of the graves, and they're tampering with evidence to alot of crimes in other things like that. It would be nice to help, but it seems for that to be helped, a larger government would have to step in.

  23. I feel as if we are all together no matter what country we live in or where we come from. Everybody has to lean on somebody else for help. This world can not strive for long if nobody lends a helping hand.

  24. *I would also like to point out not ALL countries in Africa are unindustialized ones.

  25. Micahel C.. There is many ways that you can help the needed. A couple dollars will feed a family for a week, in places like the Phillipines, Africa, Mexico, etc. Cloths and shoes that you don't wear, is useful for them. Many of them walk barefeet, because they can hardly afford food. So anything that you can donate would be very useful
