July 21, Question 1

In yesterday's lecture, Ames discussed how professors have both personal and professional motivations for what they study and teach. On both a personal and professional level, why do you want to study at Columbia?

  1. I would like to study at Columbia because, one, I heard they had a good Journaliam program, and that they had good internships. Also, hopefully after I get through with the program, I can get to where I want to go, career wise, after college.

  4. On a personal level i chose columbia because my mother went here, and because i wanted to stay close to home.On a more professional level i chose columbia because it's everything i am interested in the ARTS. More importantly broadcasting journalism which is what i want to major in. Although Columbia has much more to offer, in high school i was involved in the theatre, in art exhibitions, i had a poem submitted in the schools writting journal. Columbia has all of that and more why wouldnt I want to come here.

  6. I want to study at Columbia because I feel like it is a place where I can truly develop as a person and in my career. I have heard many things about this school and I also know that successful writers have come from this school. It is also close enough to home so that if it is necessary I can come home but far enough away so that it is possible to move out

  7. I dont believe that a traditional university would have helped me reach and maintain my true potential. I love music and the arts, and i know i would not be happy if i have a regular career. Columbia really pushes for your own individuality, while at the same time preparing you for the world; which doesnt seem to quite see it from your point of view.

  8. After hearing the lecture from yesterday I agree with having both a personal and professional motivations to study. My personal reason for attending college is because I'm easily distracted, so the last place I needed to be was at a college where partying was the main source of fun. I'm very close to my God Father Kenny and he gradutaed from Columbia as well as my favorite uncle Arturo and two of my siblings. Having the chance to already know information about Columbia I was able to base my decisions on other people experiences and match them to my own. I found over the years while I'm very athletic, cheerleading, gymnastics and dance, I have a greater passion for the more creative study that Columbia offers me. And professional wise I just feel that a school that focus greatly on the Arts which is what I attendig to study anyway. I feel that I can reach the level I'm trying to reach to help me get to the spot I want to be in career after college.

  9. I want to study at Columbia because it offers the things that I want and I get to live in the heart of downtown Chicago, and I think that that is awesome. My professional reason is that I think that it will better my skills in the subject that I want to major in. Make me a better person all around, and probably make me more confident in the things that I put forth. After college I plan on doing many things with my life. and I think that Columbia will get me started on that path.

P.S. This is Jay Fleeks. lol.

  10. I believe tha Columbia will help me learn how to market myself if I don't succeed at being a music producer, rather than just not going to school and trying to make it, I'd rather take classes so I have a degree in something. Personally, I just have had a feeling about this school, my Dad kept telling me no but I refused to go to any other school. I just knew that this is where I need to be, so now that I'm here Im going to do my best to succeed.

  11. I believe that each person has personal and professional motivations to why you do sertain things. For ex.. the reason why I want to attend Columbia, is because I'm majoring in dance. Dance has been my passion since I was little. I cant imagine having another career that isn't dance. My professional motivation is making a succesful career out of it. Coming to Columbia will make me an educated and professional person in my major of study. I want to be fully prepared and ready to give it my all once i graduate. I know that at Columbia I will accomplish that. Being in the bridge program has helped me realize how awesome Columbia and its staff are, that itself gives me more motivation to keep on pushing harder. Since the first day of the Bridge program until today what has been your motivation?

  12. Columbia is the perfect place for a person to express there artistic visions. The classes match up well with the line of work im going in. Personally columbia fits with my lyfestyle and others around me are in the same field. That helps me because everyone can collab ther thoughts together and come up with better ideas in there work.
